Ephraim Moravian News

Marcia Larsen & Alice Spooner

We were saddened to learn that Marcia Larsen and Alice Spooner died mid-March within 15 minutes of each other. Marcia was a longtime member of the Ephraim Moravian Church, and Alice played organ and piano for church services during the summer.

Bernice Koehler says, “Alice loved Ephraim Moravian Church and was one of our organists for summer services for many years. She also played for special music. She was very loyal in contributing her music to church services, and she was always there when we needed her.” Everyone who knew Alice was touched by her gentle nature.

Marcia was a larger-than-life member of the Ephraim community for decades. Her late husband, Charles (Chuck), was a descendant of Ole Larsen, one of the founding members of the Ephraim Moravian Church. A few years ago, Chuck and Irv Oneson, both members of the church, were the only remaining survivors of the small group of immigrants responsible for founding the village and the church in 1853.

Both Marcia and Alice were longtime supporters of the Peninsula Music Festival, which was founded by Dr. Thor Johnson, a Moravian. The Larsens were also involved in the Ephraim Historical Foundation, and Chuck was president of the Foundation from 1967-69.

Joyful Noise Sunday

The first Sunday of every month is becoming well known as “Joyful Noise Sunday.” Many of us have begun to save up our change for the month and joyfully and noisily (or in the case of folding money, a vocal “Plink” ) drop it into the metal bowls as they are passed. These offerings are usually about $50. The Trustees have decided to designate the following four outreach activities in 2008 for this special way of giving. They each will receive three offerings annually.

·          Loaves and Fishes

·          Sunday School - Sponsoring a foster child

·          Pastor’s Discretionary Fund

·          Help of Door County
